Challenge: How slow can you eat?
Today I want to offer you what I consider to be one of the most powerful tools for transforming not just your diet, but your body and mind as well. I am also going to issue you a challenge.
Eating slowly can improve your digestion. Calm you down. And help you feel more satisfied with less food.
It sounds simple, but it might be the most challenging thing you try.
At each meal today, take a few extra minutes to simply pause. Put the fork down between each bite. Chew your food… swallow... take a breath. When you take your next bite, notice - and enjoy - the taste and texture of your food. Then put the fork down again. Take another breath. Repeat.
Chewing your food is so important. It helps to break down the large pieces of food into smaller ones to allow for easier digestion and nutrient absorption. Thoroughly chewing your food also releases more saliva which contains enzymes that help with digestion.
Focus and pay attention to what is in front of you. When you eat, enjoy it. If you are eating with other people enjoy their company. Eliminate as many distractions as possible when you try this. Turn off the TV and put down the cell phone down for 20 minutes. You can do it!
Eating slowly is the first step towards breaking the vicious cycle of mindless eating that causes weight gain, indigestion and feelings of shame associated with overeating.
